Weekly Roundup: Volume 1, Issue 4

July 31, 2011

There wasn’t much to entertain this week, but the few noteworthy items here deserve the paragraphs they got. I added a new section for things I’m reading and listening to. I would like to briefly state that I have no Mario Party skills. But let’s not talk about that…

1. Catherine
Novio Abel loves video games, which is perfectly fine by me. But when I first saw the cover art for the brand new “Catherine” for PS3 and 360, I worried that by boyfriend was going to be playing some kind of anime fantasy porno. Folks, it gives me great pleasure to say that I, and fellow girlfriends of video game lovers, can rest easy knowing that “Catherine” is in fact not pornographic, just psychologically thrilling and somewhat terrifying. Plus, it might make guys think twice about cheating…or else…
I watched some of the game play, and it looks good. I wouldn’t get very far, since my gaming skills are well below sub par, but I recommend it for those who are better at such things.

You might be sexy, but at least I'm three-dimensional!

2. Project Runway (Spoilers!)
Another guilty pleasure! Season 9 began on Wednesday, hooray! I probably geek out over this even more than SYTYCD. I have to say, I was glad to see Rafael go home. I didn’t like his portfolio, and his runway outfit was horrendous. Bert definitely surprised me. I found his portfolio underwhelming, but his dress on the runway adorable. I would wear it if it weren’t made from his boxers! The first challenge was fun and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens this season, even though, like most PR fans, last season crushed me with disappointment. I decided that it would be fun to take on each week’s challenge myself and sketch out a design of what I would make, if I could make things. Unfortunately, the night before I watched this episode, I slept in huge basketball shorts and an ugly t-shirt. I wish I’d been wearing a beautiful robe like Anya! Here’s what I came up with for the PJ “come as you are” challenge:

And if I had been on the show, Rafael would have lasted another week!

Join the fun! Design an outfit out of your pj’s and a bed sheet and send me a picture. I’ll post it, and we’ll all have a good time :)

3. Lady Gaga
As much as I dislike her, I have to say she made a good SYTYCD judge. The outfit was wonky as always, but as a person she remained cool and tame. My heart hasn’t changed about her music and taste, but I was pleasantly surprised by her time on the panel.

4. Jiko
I met some of my fam for dinner on Saturday at Jiko, an African-inspired restaurant in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. All of us ladies were impressed. The staff was friendly and attentive, but more importantly, the food was delicious. We were all served quinoa, naan with four different sauces, and African bread with tandoori butter to start. I enjoyed a Brentwood Creamy Corn Soup to start, and although I can’t pronounce the name of my entrée, it was delicious. It was a vegetarian dish of “Aleecha, Shimbra Asa, Inguday Tibs” — or for those of us who speak American, a chickpea cake, spiced-mushroom spinach rolls, and a vegetable stack of eggplant and onions. The perfect texture of the chickpea cake stole the show for me. It was smooth and creamy on the inside, with a super thin layer of crunch on the outside. I could eat a hundred. Birthday girl Aunt Laura got free creme brulee, and we also ordered “One Last Cup,” a rich infusion of chocolate and coffee. If I were a rich girl, I’d come back all the time for the food and cute Moroccan waiter. Maybe one day!

Yum, yum, and yum.

Now Reading: I finished Amy Tan’s “Saving Fish From Drowning.” It was OK. Today I started Dave Eggers’ “What Is the What.” It’s my first Eggers book, so I’m excited.

Listening To: In the car, I’ve got The White Stripes’ “Elephant.” This album is sexy. To my iTunes, I just added an Orlando Calling mix that my friend Brandon made, which is good because I’m going, and need to know who I want to see!
